Schedule an AppointmentHIV and STI Prevention
Effective prevention is individualized — it starts with an honest conversation about your health, your risks, and which strategies fit your situation. Modern prevention includes testing, counseling, and for eligible adults, medication-based options.
At CJ Medical Center, Carlos Jimenez, DNP, PMHNP-C, ADHD-CCSP, FNP-C offers telehealth prevention evaluation for adults 18 and older — discussing strategies such as PrEP and DoxyPEP, coordinating appropriate testing, and providing ongoing follow-up.
Which prevention modalities are available to you depends on your evaluation, your eligibility, and what is offered in your location. An evaluation does not guarantee any particular medication or outcome.
Who May Benefit from a Prevention Evaluation
A prevention evaluation may be appropriate for adults in situations such as the following. Your provider determines whether a particular strategy fits your circumstances.
HIV prevention interest
Adults who want to understand their options for reducing the risk of acquiring HIV.
STI prevention and screening
Adults interested in STI screening, prevention counseling, or evaluation after potential exposure concerns.
Previous prevention experience
Adults who have used PrEP or other prevention strategies and want continued clinical oversight.
Questions about eligibility
Adults unsure whether PrEP, DoxyPEP, or other strategies apply to their situation.
Recent exposure concerns
If you believe you may have had a recent HIV exposure, post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is a different, time-sensitive intervention — seek care promptly; do not wait for a routine appointment.
What a Prevention Evaluation Covers
Health and history review
Your provider reviews your health history, current medications, and relevant factors that shape prevention options.
Risk and eligibility assessment
An individualized, judgment-free discussion of which prevention strategies may be appropriate — and which would not be.
Testing discussion
Review of required and recommended testing — including baseline HIV testing and STI screening — before and during prevention strategies.
Plan and follow-up
If a strategy is appropriate, you agree on a plan with required follow-up and monitoring. A prescription is never guaranteed.
Prevention Options — What to Know
Prevention strategies differ in what they protect against and who they are appropriate for. Your provider will explain what applies to your situation — the following is educational context, not a guarantee that any option is offered or right for you:
- PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is an HIV prevention strategy for eligible people without HIV. Oral and injectable PrEP options are offered when clinically appropriate. Your provider will review eligibility, required testing, follow-up, and the arrangements needed for the selected option — prescriptions are never guaranteed.
- PrEP does not provide absolute protection and does not replace other prevention measures. Baseline HIV testing and regular follow-up testing are required parts of PrEP care.
- DoxyPEP (doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis) is an antibiotic-based strategy that may be considered for eligible adults based on clinical history, current recommendations, potential benefits, risks, and antimicrobial stewardship considerations. It does not prevent HIV and is not appropriate for everyone.
- HIV post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is a separate, urgent intervention for possible recent HIV exposure — it is not the same as PrEP or DoxyPEP and requires prompt evaluation within specific clinical timeframes.
- STI screening, prevention counseling, and laboratory coordination may be part of your plan when clinically indicated.
- Regular follow-up visits are required when a prevention strategy is in place.
Safety, Monitoring and Follow-Up
Medication-based prevention requires ongoing clinical oversight — follow-up testing, monitoring for side effects or contraindications, and periodic reassessment of whether the strategy still fits your situation. Your provider will explain the specific monitoring schedule that applies to any plan you start. If your needs require in-person examination, procedures, or services outside telehealth scope, your provider will discuss appropriate referral options.

What is the difference between PrEP and DoxyPEP?
PrEP prevents HIV — it is for eligible people without HIV. DoxyPEP is an antibiotic-based strategy studied for reducing certain bacterial STIs (such as syphilis and chlamydia) in some eligible populations — it does not prevent HIV. They are different strategies, not interchangeable.
Is DoxyPEP right for everyone?
No. DoxyPEP is not a universal strategy — eligibility depends on your history, the populations it has been studied in, contraindications, current clinical guidance, and considerations including antimicrobial resistance. Your provider will determine whether it applies to you.
Do you offer PrEP — oral or injectable?
Yes — oral and injectable PrEP options are offered when clinically appropriate, subject to eligibility and applicable requirements. Your provider will review which option fits your situation and explain the arrangements needed — an injectable medication is not administered during the video visit itself. A prescription is never guaranteed.
What testing is required?
Baseline HIV testing is required before starting PrEP, and ongoing testing is part of continuing care. STI screening and other laboratory work may be recommended depending on your plan — testing is performed by laboratories, not during the video visit.
I think I had a recent HIV exposure. What should I do?
Possible recent HIV exposure is time-sensitive — post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) must be started within a specific clinical window. Seek care promptly through an urgent care or emergency service rather than waiting for a routine telehealth appointment.
How much does a visit cost?
Contact us to confirm the right visit type and current pricing for your situation. Insurance is accepted in select states — please verify your coverage before scheduling.
Do you provide this care for minors?
No. CJ Medical Center provides services exclusively for adults 18 years of age and older.
In case of emergency: CJ Medical Center is not an emergency or crisis service. If you or someone you know is in crisis or experiencing a medical emergency, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), call 911, or go to your nearest emergency room.
